Summary

On the planet of Jakku, Poe Dameron, the Resistance's best and most daring pilot, has been sent to retrieve the last piece of a map leading to the self-exiled Luke Skywalker. He talks to Lor San Tekka, a village elder who has the last piece of the holo-map, then tries unsuccessfully to flee the First Order, the remnant of the Empire. Fortunately, he left the map with his droid, BB-8, who flees and stumbles upon a junkyard settlement where the droid meets Rey, a scavenger who helps BB-8 and lets the droid stay at her home.

Meanwhile, Poe is taken to the First Order's Imperial Star Destroyer to be tortured by Kylo Ren, a Dark Side-seduced Jedi, who led the stormtrooper assault on Jakku, for the last piece of the map to Luke, and Ren learns that BB-8 has the map, and he sends stormtroopers to search for BB-8. Stormtrooper FN-2187's loyalty to the First Order shatters, due to seeing his comrade stormtrooper dying before him when the First Order assaulted the village. FN-2187 decides to free Poe and escape with him aboard a TIE fighter. After a narrow escape from the Star Destroyer's turbolaser defenses,  FN-2187 is dubbed Finn by Poe, then they crash-land on Jakku, and Poe is presumed dead.

Finn travels to the junkyard settlement and meets Rey and BB-8,  who reluctantly join him. Stormtroopers attack the settlement, and the trio manage to escape on a highly modified Correlian Engineering Corporation (CEC) YT-1300 light freighter that looked like a junk heap, which turns out to be the Millennium Falcon, which is captured by a much larger ship piloted and owned by Han Solo and Chewbacca.
